To Begin With That Small Running Sound Is Not Always So Small

A running toilet is way too easy to ignore at first and that is not good.

Because all you do is to flush, walk away and hear water still moving in the tank and you think maybe it will stop after a minute but as you are sound asleep it just keeps going.

And that right there is all your clean water that is being wasted for no reason at all.

So that is why knowing how to stop a running toilet matters so much because sometimes the fix is simple or sometimes the problem points to the worn parts, bad adjustment or an older toilet that really needs some good professional attention.

Just Start By Taking That Tank Lid Off Alright

Well the first step is very simple.

Where you go and just remove the toilet tank lid and set it somewhere safe but do not place it on the toilet seat where it can slide and crack and so just put it on a towel or flat surface.

And now flush once and watch what happens inside the tank and here you are looking for a few basic things like:

  • Does that flapper close all the way through?
  • Or is that chain too tight or too loose?
  • Is the water rising too high?
  • Is water spilling into the overflow tube?
  • Does the fill valve keep running after the tank is full?

So yeah this quick look often tells you where the problem is coming from hopefully.

Now Make Sure To Check The Flapper First

Now when it comes to the flapper well it is just the rubber piece at the bottom of the tank where it lifts when you flush and then drops back down to seal the whole tank.

And so if it is warped, dirty, cracked or not sitting flat then yes the water leaks into the bowl and then the fill valve turns on again to replace the lost water and that right there is the most classic running toilet cycle.

That is why a toilet flapper replacement is one of the most common fixes because no matter what you do the flappers are gonna wear out over time.

Plus the Fluid Master has some great guidance on how to sort this mess out.

Oh and I almost forgot before you start replacing it just wipe the flapper and the opening it sits on because the mineral buildup or grit can sometimes stop it from sealing completely but even after doing that if it still leaks or feels stiff then replace it with the correct size and style and you are good to go.

Also Make Sure That The Chain Is Not Fighting Against The Flapper

Now coming to the next thing here the chain connects the flush handle to the flapper.

But sometimes if the chain is too tight then it holds the flapper slightly open and if it is too loose then the toilet may not flush properly and so both can cause real trouble.

That is why there should be a little slack in the chain like when the flapper is closed and not a lot but just enough so that the flapper can sit flat without being pulled upward.

So yeah again this is one of those tiny adjustments that can solve the whole problem in mere seconds.

Alright Now Look At The Water Level

Next up if the water level rises too high in the tank then it may run into the overflow tube.

And that tube is there to prevent the tank from flooding but if the water keeps spilling into it then yeah no doubt the toilet will keep refilling and so this usually points to a float adjustment or a toilet fill valve problem.

And so most tanks have a water level mark inside and if the water is above that mark then adjust the float so that the fill valve shuts off sooner.

Plus some toilets even have a float ball on an arm while others have a float cup that moves up and down along the fill valve and so the setup depends on the toilet but the goal here is the same and that is to make the tank fill up and then stop and stay quiet.

Hey Try That Food Coloring Test

Some leaks are quiet like way too quiet.

Where the toilet may not even make so much noise but the water can still start slipping from the tank and into the bowl and so here a simple dye test can lend a lot of help.

And so just go and put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and do not flush like just wait around 10 minutes and if color appears in the bowl then yes water is leaking past the flapper or that flush valve seal.

That is why the CSWR also recommends this kind of tank test for identifying toilet leaks before they can keep wasting all your water unnoticed.

So yeah this is a very useful check when your water bill feels high even when your routine is all normal.

Yeah Please Do Not Ignore All That Water Waste

At the end of the day a toilet may not look so serious to you because there is no puddle on the floor.

But a hidden toilet tank leak can waste a surprising amount of water and that is why toilet water waste should not be treated like some kind of  a background sound.

So if the toilet runs every single hour then refills by itself and never fully shuts off then yes it is a red flag and it is telling you something.

And that is you need to call Paradise Plumbing because only they can help you with their top professional toilet repair where they can do leak checks and fix all kinds of running toilet problems that can keep wasting so much water behind your back.
